Our goal was two peaks on the ridge between Tebenkof glacier and Blackstone Bay. Our route in red. Click here for a good photo of the ridge, taken from the other side of Blackstone Bay

We left the boat anchored in front of the beach at Tebenkof Glacier. As the tide went out, the boat was beached (so it couldn't go anywhere). Hopefully we'd time the tides right so it would be floating when we returned.

When we reached shore, we found a small stream that was full of dead and dying salmon.

This area seemed like a great place for a bear - lots of fish (mmm...looks tasty!) and berries.

Sure enough, we hadn't walked 100 feet before Tim spotted the local, chowing down on salmon.

Exiting the beach, we entered a really cool forest covered in bright green moss. Unfortunately, the open grassy ground quickly gave way to nasty bushwhacking.

Getting from the beach up to the ridge was only a couple of miles, but most of it was bushwhacking through willows, followed by bushwhacking up a fairly steep and slippery slope. Plus there were some vicious little biting flies, just for good measure. A

On the way up, Rob spotted a weather balloon. The orange balloon made an excellent route marker for helping us find our way back down. Rob brought the weather balloon home to send back to NOAA.

At the top of our first peak, looking into Blackstone Bay. It was really interesting to see Blackstone from this side. I've seen it plenty of times from the ridge on the other side of the bay and from inside the bay itself, but this perspective was uniq

While on the first peak, we scouted the second one(in foreground). Keeping the tides in mind, we had about an hour and a half to get to the second peak and back to the first one before heading down. Better hustle!

Tim with Tebenkof Glacier behind him. The views in every direction were full of mountains, ocean, and glaciers. The 'Wow' quotient was very high today.

On our way back down, we scouted a different bushwhacking route that brought us along the end of the Tebenkof's glacial stream. Still had plenty of bushwhacking, but not as bad as the way up.

When we returned, the boat was floating in plenty of water. Time to head for home after an amazing day in Prince William Sound.
