This map shows the location of the peak we hoped to climb in relation to Anchorage (Yellow diamond on the peak - 60 miles southeast of Anchorage). We drove to Whittier, launched Tim's boat and headed out into Prince William Sound.

On the way out, Tim dropped off three friends who were planning to hike up and over from Billings Creek to Carmen Lake and float out the 20 mile river in their packrafts. Here they have just left the boat and paddle to the shore near Billings Creek.

This map shows our intended route. We moored the boat in Hummer Bay. While it would have been shorter to head straight up to the west, we went up on the east side because it meant less bushwhacking and no wet, marshy area. It made for a longer hike, bu

We paddled ashore in a raft and kayak, and then had to bushwhack about 1000 feet up a slope to the ridge. The bushwhacking isn't all that fun, but it keeps out the riffraff. After an hour or so, we were on the tundra and moving quickly.

This picture, taken from the ridge on the east side of Hummer Bay, shows most of our route. We were going to head up and over the 2255' peak on the right edge of the picture, then we'd start heading to the left. Down the ridge to the middle of the picture

Next we had to traverse this slope just below the glacier, so that we could get to the main ridgeline seen here. That was our route to the summit. Judging by the view, we weren't sure we would be able to pick a safe route across - it looked rocky, stee

Once we got to the glacier, we found that it wasn't quite as gnarly as it looked from afar. We had to pick a careful route across rocks, ice, and streams, but it wasn't too difficult.

Once we made the traverse below the glacier, we had to pick our way up a steep tundra slope to the top. We made it to the top, and with no cairn or other sign of previous visitors we could safely assume that we were the first people to hit this peak. In

Wildfires in Interior Alaska made for a very hazy & smoky sky, so the pictures didn't come out great, but the views were amazing.
