On July 9, Tim Kelley took Scott & I out on his boat in Prince William Sound to attempt to bag a couple of peaks above Wells Bay. For more pics of this trip, check out Tim's website. As you can se

We left Friday evening and spent the night on the boat near the head of Wells Bay. In the AM, we headed to shore and began our ascent.

Most of the climb was in open terrain. We only had a couple of short sections of bushwhacking.

We passed a couple of very scenic lakes on the way up.

As you can see on the maps, our route was T-shaped. This picture was taken looking east from the junction in the middle of the T. Our plan was to follow the rigdeline to the right to peak 3101. Then come back along the ridge and go the other way to pea

From here, we scouted our route up the south peak. Our plan was to follow the ridgeline along then flat, then cross the snowfield to the right as we started ascending, then climb the rocky spine up to the top. Was the top ridge hikable? We weren't sure

About 50% of the ground on the ridge was still covered by snow, but that didn't stop the lupine from popping up where it could.

As we headed up the south peak, we saw a mountain goat ahead of us. Could we beat him to the top?

The goat kept looking back, probably wonding what kind of strange animals we were. He kicked our butts and got to the top first. He chose the exact same route we had scouted, which was a good sign.

A cool snow bridge near the top. Its a long way down the cliff in front of the snow. The goat walked over the top of bridge.

Scott hits the top. The good news is that the ridge was narrow, but hikable.

The bad news is that as we reached the top we found a cairn, meaning that someone had been here before! A bit of a bummer, but hard to complain when we were on top of a spectacular peak. Photo by Tim Kelley

As we glissaded down the snowfields, we set our sites on the far peak. Had the previous peak-baggers beaten us to that one too? Photo by Tim Kelley.

We began to get pressed for time as we headed to the north peak, so picked up the pace which meant no pictures until the top. When we reached the top, there was no cairn, so we built this one and claimed the first ascent.

On the boat ride home, we spotted this iceberg and drove over to check it out. It was completely covered in seagulls.

Tim wanted to ski the 'berg, but I don't think he trusted Scott and I to stick around if he handed us the wheel of his boat.
